Tournament Types
USTA NorCal Adult Tournaments come in various formats, ensuring there’s something for every player. We’ve got options based on age, skill level and more. Find the format that suits your style and dive into the action.
NTRP - National Tennis Rating Program
NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) tournaments offer players the ability to play tournaments at their appropriate NTRP rating level. NTRP tournaments offer divisions grouped by level (2.5-5.5) and age (18+, 40+, and 55+) and are offered in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. These tournaments may take place over 1 to 5 days but most commonly are held Friday through Sunday. One-day (Level 7) events are a convenient way for league or recreational players to experience the excitement without the weekend commitment. Join in, meet new players, and enjoy the game in a shorter, action-packed format.
Tournaments with an NTRP Gold Cup Series designation are a level 4 tournament.
Players who compete in tournaments with a Tournament of the Year designation will earn Level 5 ranking points. The top 8 players that earned the most ranking points in the section will compete in a Grand Prix Tournament – the season finale in the NorCal section.
NTRP tournaments also allow players to work towards advancing to the NTRP National Championships. Players can qualify for the NTRP National Championships via the Grand Prix – the NorCal Season Finale, the NorCal Qualifier, or the National Standings List. For more details about how to qualify for the NTRP National Championships, click here. For more information about the NTRP National Championships, click here.
IMPORTANT:
Any player participating in a USTA NorCal-sanctioned NTRP tournament must have an NTRP rating.
Violating this requirement or playing below the assigned NorCal self-rating level will result in an automatic 30-day suspension. Furthermore, any points earned in that tournament toward the National Standings List and the seeding/tentative/final rankings lists will be promptly removed.
Stay informed, play fair, and let’s keep the game respectful and enjoyable for all.
Age Group
These tournaments are open to all levels and categorized in five-year increments, spanning from 30 to 100. To be eligible for an age division event, players need to hit the minimum age by December 31 of the scheduled starting year for that division. Age Group division players often travel around the country to compete in different tournaments and on different court surfaces, aiming at the coveted Gold Ball won at a National Championship.

Wheelchair
Wheelchair tennis stands out as one of the fastest-growing and most demanding wheelchair sports and enhances mobility, builds strength and improves cardiovascular fitness, offering individuals with disabilities the opportunity to engage in activities with both able-bodied and disabled peers and family members. In singles or doubles matches against able-bodied players, wheelchair players get two bounces while their counterparts get one, adding an extra layer of inclusivity.
Northern California hosts a variety of wheelchair tournaments, featuring recreational, competitive, and quadriplegic divisions. Among them is the annual North-South Wheelchair Challenge, a premier event showcasing the rivalry between the top wheelchair players from Northern and Southern California, vying for glory on the court.
